Papers of Ulrich Ellis. 1900-1972.

Boxes 8-41 include Ellis's writings and career as journalist (1914-1926) and in Canberra (1926-1939) including material on the Kangaroo Club, Canberra Tourist Bureau, self government and disputes with Department of the Interior. Also consists of subject files on the constitution, (Federalism and loans Council matters), transport, water resources, and centralism (on regional development) and post war reconstruction. Includes Ellis's work as a Political Secretary to Earle Page then Leader of the Federal Country Party (1936-1938) and his work as executive of the New England New State Movement and the New State Movement in general (1928-1972). The political figures John McEwen, Arthur Fadden, Joseph Lyons and the academic Don Aitken are included in the collection. Boxes 1-7 document mainly Ellis's work as Political Secretary to the Federal Country Party leader Earle Page from 1928-1936. They also cover the formation and history of the Country Party throughout Australia from 1900-1949. The records consists of correspondence, minutes of the Country Party, policy speeches, and notes on Ellis's book, "A history of the Australian Country Party", 1963. The political identities Joseph Lyons, Robert Menzies and Stanley Bruce are mentioned in these papers. % &

Ulrich Ruegg Ellis was a journalist from 1921-1925. From 1928-1936 he was Political Secretary to Earle Page leader of the Federal Country Party. Following this period he made trips overseas to Europe from 1936-1939 where he met Lloyd George and Winston Churchill. Between 1936-1940 he was commercial intelligence officer at the Department of Commerce. Following posts in Public Relations in Government departments after the war he set up the Office of Rural Research in Canberra in 1966. ...
